Ouchi-juku

"Ouchi-juku" to preserve the townscape of Edo era to the present days. It was chosen as the third of the important preservation district of historic buildings in the nation in 1981. Soba restaurants, gift shops and guesthouses under thatched roofs stand next to each other along the 500m-road which used to be called Shimotsuke Way to connect Aizuwakamatsu and Nikko Imaichi. In spring, the flowers of field mustard swing in the wind and welcome the visitors. The sound of water running in the water paths on both sides of the "Dirt Road" reproducing the old-time major way has been selected as one of the "Best 100 Audio Scenery of Japan", and still supports the daily lives of villagers. When the Children's Day approaches, the carp banners swim over the thatched roofs and tulips blooms under the roofs of village houses.

Building of Yunokamionsen Station

One of the rare station buildings in Japan with a thatched roof. Inside the building is the irori fireplace holding live fire all year long. The footbath "Oyakojizo no Yu" was unveiled right by the station in fall 2012. The local association of "Yunokamionsen Tourism Association" cleans and maintains the facility every Wednesday. You can relax and enjoy the footbath when the cleaning/maintenance work is not underway. Petals from Someiyoshino cherry trees standing in the station property gently float over the platform to welcome the incoming trains in mid-April. It is the departing/arrival point of "Saruyu-go", the tour bus to Ouchi-juku which operates five services daily (April 1 - November 30).
